Should Wong Kan Seng resign?
2 03 2008Regarding the recent escape of JI leader Mas Selamat Kastari, someone started an interesting poll in STOMP on “Who should resign over the terrorist escape issue?”. At the time of this blog entry, the results are as follows:
Chief Of Police: 14.39%
Wong Kan Seng (Minister Of Home Affairs) : 16.55%
Both should resign: 69.06%
If combined together, Wong Kan Seng scores an overwhelming 85.61%! (now, THAT is what we call a strong mandate, not 66.6%)
Hurry over and cast your vote now!
Update (2 Mar 2008): Boo boo! The poll has just been removed from STOMP (the above link now points to an invalid thread). I agree as mr brown muses: “We are not like those free-wheeling and chaotic governments from Western democracies that make their leaders accountable for every little thing.”
Update (10 Mar 2008): Ah, found another similar poll that’s active: http://www.luckypolls.com/index.php?act=08&id=10013
make a new poll lah! =)
YES!!! somebody should account for it! A simple trick like going to the toilet and let him escape. Thereafter mobilise thousands of police, army, GRASSROOTS to look for him.
I am still amazed, how did he escape?!
No lah, because Singapore not enough people to fill up that role. Imagine if they both step down …
Or not …

In other countries, once the Minister of the chief of certain forces failed their task; they would be asked to resign or they will resign at will. It’s like you are working in a company and something bad screwed up. There is only two options the company will do; one is “Condem” in your post or two “Pack your stuffs”.
However, that does not happen here in SIngapore because the pay and etc are too good to be left out. Furthermore, it is the culture of Singapore Government to just let things ease down and the matter will be forgotten. That is because the people of Singapore are brought up to be minding their own business especially when it comes to Government problem.
Whatever it is, the both of them should step-down from their post and let someone else does the job instead.
Hi Tony, thanks for dropping by. I agree with you.
When it comes to ministerial salaries, our government always wants it to be pegged to the private sector. But when it comes to subjecting our ministers to the consequences of adverse performance, does our government adopt the same approach as the private sector too?
In the private sector, if someone caused an incident of similar scale that damaged the company’s reputation and caused the company to waste thousands of days of manpower to try salvage the damage, we can be sure the person as well as his superior + everyone up the line will get the sack. Even if they do not get the sack, they can forget about their performance bonus for this year. In some cases, such people are even ordered to compensate the company for the monetary losses!
Do we see any of these happening now?
Hi SingChyun,
Thanks for the compliment hahahaha.
Well, everyone can see and heard what our PM Lee has said in the Parliment. The speech the delivered and the way he protrait the subject on the Mas Selamat issue was a laughing and yet shocking manner.
He said that our citizen should not practice the resignation culture, that means to say, from now and the future the Ministers or even the Police authorities can go around making mistakes and have nothing to worry about; because they are “SOMEHOW” protected.
For example the Outram MRT station cop shooting case. The distance between the subject and the cops are justifiable for them to not resort to utilize the use of firearm. They should be able to utilize their baton to neutralize the threat instead. If the range is too close, I must say, they cops don;t stand a chance to even pull-out their revolver. Till date there is nothing over the case either. That is what I mean they are protected in certain ways.
In SIngapore, the Government often tell us do not follow what other countries people are doing bla bla bla. But then again, can they also be flexible as to be fair player during election? The answer is “NO” because this is a one party country.
In most Government investigation including the ISD incident, we can see that the so-call independant investigation committee are all either Ex-Police High Authority and other Ex-Government post people. Is that what we call as independant???? Hahahaha! To me and many others, we all know that we just have to sit-down get a can of Coke and Pop-corn and enjoy the drama over the TV.
I would strongly recommend all those whom have kids, please raise your kids well and try to get them into being a Member of Parliment or Minister. Get good pay, good retirement scheme, well-protected and others.
As for whether Wong Kan Seng or the Chief of Police should be sacked or not; well think it is pointless raising the issue bacause you can say what you want and it will not happen. Just like whether you like it nor not, they are going to raise GST, Fuel, Food and others. We are sugar-cane and they are the juice crusher.
You think the Singaporean wants to live here in these days Governance? Too bad, most of us are not well-off. The people can see that most well-off are having PR elsewhere and live there rather than hanging around here. This is an independant country, yes you are right, but under close supervision. Changi prison still have rooms for many.
Maybe WKS should not resign but be demoted and take a pay cut. That’s what happen to the guys in the uniformed group too. Be brave to take the blame as no one is perfect. Be accountable rather than to give excuses. There are lots of talented people in Singapore who can fill in the gap.
